B SUTHERLAND (HE/THEY), MSW INTERN
I’m B (he/they), a lifelong Chicagoan who entered the field of social work for the opportunity to create lasting, positive change in the lives of others. Before I came to social work, my areas of focus were theater and feminist theory. I believe that we are each influenced not only by our upbringing and families of origin, but also by the political and economic structures in which we live. For many of us, this means experiencing racial, economic, sexual and gender-based oppression, which impacts both our mental and physical health. As a working class member of the transgender community, I know how harmful it can be to live in a world that feels like it was built against you. But you are not alone in this. Together, we can fight to make the world a safer, calmer, happier place for you. My approach to therapy is person-centered, which means specific to your needs, experiences and environment. I embrace neurodivergency and will always endeavor to support you as a whole and unique person, not just your diagnosis. My work is trauma-informed, with a focus on practical solutions and harm reduction. I believe in the importance of the mind-body relationship and work to include mindfulness and somatic techniques in my practice. As your therapist, I will be your ally and fellow warrior on the path to the safety and happiness you deserve.
